Water Treatment Process

1. 1. Coagulation and Flocculation

Coagulants are added to raw water to help small particles like dirt and debris stick together, forming larger clumps called “flocs.” Flocculation follows, gently mixing to encourage floc growth, making it easier to remove impurities.

Air is introduced to oxidize dissolved metals and remove odors. Pall rings are added to increase surface area, and natural aerators or compressors supply air in a water-to-air ratio of 1:2 or higher, enhancing water quality.

Rapid sand filters or pressure vessels remove remaining impurities, achieving filtration rates of 12 to 15 m³/hr/m². The filtration media used can vary based on requirements and may include sand, Katalox, manganese dioxide, anthracite, activated carbon, and other specialized media, providing optimal removal of contaminants tailored to the specific water quality needs of the community.

Chlorine is added for disinfection, eliminating harmful microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. This provides residual protection, preventing recontamination during storage and distribution, ensuring the water stays safe for consumption.
